How to Get the Savings Habit

Almost everyone wants to save some money for the future, but it is difficult to start this good habit. These tips my help:

  • Start small - Set aside pocket change and deposit it monthly. Or save $1 a day.
  • Pay yourself - Keep making "loan" payments once you've paid off a loan. Only now pay yourself by saving that same amount.
  • Set goals - Set a reachable goal, maybe a new CD player in six months, or new golf clubs next season. Determine how much you have to save to reach a goal, then do it. Our It's For Me Account can help.
  • Needs vs. Wants - Think twice before spending money not in your budget. Do your really need the new item? Or merely want it?
  • Review outflow - Review where money went at the end of each month. Where can you economize?
  • Stay on course - Stay committed to savings goals you establish and check your progress on occasion.
  • Automatic savings - Sign up for direct deposit. Have savings dollars automatically deposited every payday.
  • Lock it up - Move $1,000 or more from savings accounts into share certificates of deposit. They earn higher dividends.
